FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — University of Arkansas head women’s basketball coach Jimmy Dykes announced the addition of Katherine “Katie” Powell to the 2014-15 roster. Powell is a member of the first recruiting class under Dykes. The 6-4 forward/center from Duluth, Ga., who played at Duluth High School, considered the Razorbacks last fall and signed her Southeastern Conference financial aid agreement to attend Arkansas this week. “I’m really excited to welcome Katie to the Razorback Women’s Basketball family,” Dykes said. “We are fortunate that the pieces fell into place this week and that we were able to get her in a Razorback uniform. She is a versatile scorer and with her size and length, she is of great value to us. She can make three’s, score at the rim, and at 6-4 adds size defensively that we need.” Powell was a three-star prospect and the 16th-rated center nationally by ESPN HoopGurlz in the fall. She was a 6A All-State Honorable Mention selection and an all-region honoree last season after averaging 17.8 points per game, which ranked seventh in Gwinnet County, to go with 9.8 rebounds per contest. Powell blocked 123 shots during her sophomore season, ranking second in Gwinnett County history for a single season, while earning first-team all-region honors as a freshman after averaging 11.8 points and 7.3 boards per game. Powell helped lead Duluth to four-consecutive state tournament appearances. As a junior, Powell was team MVP, was a first-team all-region and all-county selection and among the top 30 players at the Naismith Awards. She surpassed the 1,000-point scoring plateau as a junior. Her senior season saw Powell earn preseason County Super Six honors. Powell was named Region Player of the Year, All-County First-Team, Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Senior All-Star, and Atlanta Tipoff Club All-Metro Team.
