FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas women’s tennis team resumes its fall schedule this weekend as it heads to Norman, Okla., to compete in the Oklahoma Sooner Invitational Sept. 19-21. Play will be held from the Headington Tennis Center beginning Friday morning.
Eleven teams will be represented, including host Oklahoma, North Texas, Wichita State, SMU, Denver, Abilene Christian, Texas Tech, Tulsa, Kansas State, Kansas and Arkansas. Four singles draws as well as two doubles draw will be contested. The singles bracket will begin Friday while doubles will start on Saturday.
“The Sooner Invite always provides us with excellent competition early in the fall season,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “We will use this event to get a good read on the areas of strength and improvement for the rest of the fall season.”
Eight Razorbacks are expected to see action this weekend.
Three newcomers, Makenzie Craft, Peyton Jennings and Mia Jurasic, are scheduled to make their Razorback debuts. Craft, a junior, transferred in after playing the last two seasons at Baylor and Georgia.
Jennings and Jurasic, both freshmen, will also be competing in their first collegiate tournament. Jennings will have the opportunity to play in her home state, as she came to Fayetteville by way of Cascia Hall Prep in Tulsa, Okla.
Sophomore Shannon Hudson will be making her first appearance of the fall. Hudson is ranked No. 121 in singles in the preseason ITA poll. Additionally, she has been selected to compete in the singles qualifying draw of the 2014 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships beginning Sept. 30 and will be the 21st Razorback under 12th-year head coach Michael Hegarty to compete in the nationally renowned tournament.
Juniors Flavia Araujo, Nicole Breaux and Yang Pang and sophomore Oleksandra Shkorupeieva will all be competing in their second tournament this fall after playing at the Country Club of Little Rock Collegiate Invitational Sept. 12-14.
