@RazorbackWTEN Knocked Off By Tennessee
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – In a hard-fought match that lasted nearly five hours, the No. 46 Arkansas women’s tennis team fell 4-2 to the Volunteers of Tennessee on Sunday afternoon at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
With the loss the Razorbacks fall to 13-11 overall and 2-7 in conference play, while Tennessee improves to 10-11 on the season and 2-7 in SEC competition.
“Anytime you play a five hour SEC match you know both teams deserve a lot of credit and that’s for sure today,” said head coach Michael Hegarty. “Tennessee is a great program and its always a quality match against them. We look forward to more matches with this level of effort.”
The Razorbacks got on the board first in doubles, as junior Flavia Araujo and sophomore Sasha Shkorupeieva defeated Victoria Olivarez and Tiffany Tavares 8-4 at court three and sophomore Shannon Hudson and junior Yuliya Lysa took down Joanna Henderson and Caitlyn Williams at No. 1 doubles, 8-6.
In singles action, the No. 113 ranked player in the country, Joanna Henderson, defeated Yuliya Lysa 6-1, 6-1 to tie the match at 1-1. After Victoria Olivarez beat Flavia Araujo 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5 and Sasha Shkorupeieva defeated Laurence Guevremont 7-6 (6-4), 6-2 at No. 4 singles, the match was knotted at 2-2.
The Volunteers clinched the match after picking up wins at No. 6 and No. 2. Tiffany Tavares knocked off freshman Mia Jurasic 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6) and Eve Repic won over junior Makenzie Craft 4-6, 7-6 (6-4), 7-6 (8-6) to give Tennessee its second conference victory of the season.
The Razorbacks will return to action next weekend when they host No. 41 LSU (Friday, April 3) and No. 30 Texas A&M (Sunday, April 5) in the final two home matches of the season. Live stats will be available via ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
