FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas’ women’s tennis team begins its fall slate of events on Friday, Sept. 12, as it heads to Little Rock, Ark., to compete in the Country Club of Little Rock Collegiate Invitational. The six-team tournament will last Friday to Sunday, with play being held at the Country Club of Little Rock.
Ole Miss, Memphis, Kansas, Houston and Oklahoma State join Arkansas in the field. Three singles flights and one doubles flight will make up the field with play scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. each day.
“We are very excited to begin the season at the Country Club of Little Rock,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “Every year this tournament seems to get better and it’s fantastic to showcase such a high level of college tennis to our fans in Central Arkansas. We will be hoping for a fast start to our fall competitive season.”
The four Razorbacks scheduled to compete this weekend include juniors Yang Pang, Flavia Araujo, Nicole Breaux and sophomore Oleksandra Shkorupeieva. In doubles, the lineup is set for Pang and Shkorupeieva to team up and Araujo and Breaux to pair together. Pang and Shkorupeieva have been ranked in the preseason ITA poll in doubles, coming in at No. 59.
Pang, Araujo, and Shkorupeieva are all returning from last season while Breaux will be making her Razorback debut after transferring from Louisiana-Lafayette.
Araujo and Breaux will face Anki Wind and Kathryn Hughes of Memphis for their first match in the doubles bracket while Pang and Shkorupeieva received a bye for their first match.
In singles, Pang will face Memphis’ Wind in the first match of the “A” bracket. Competing in the “B” bracket, Shkorupeieva will face Madison Harrison of Kansas and Breaux will play Belen Ludvena of Kansas. In the “C” bracket, Araujo will play Carla Tur Mari of Oklahoma State.
The tournament began in 2012 and this will be the third consecutive year in which the Razorbacks have traveled to the state capital to open their fall schedule.
