FAYETTEVILLE — Redshirt freshman outfielder Garrett Rucker broke a 2-2 tie with a seventh inning home run to lift the Red team to a 5-2 win over White on Wednesday afternoon at Baum Stadium. With the score tied at two in the bottom of the seventh, Rucker sent a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right and into the right field bullpen to put Red on top to stay. Red added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth when two runs scored on a wild pitch. Rucker and Jake Wise each had two hits to lead the Red offense, while Matt Brown and Carson Shaddy also added an RBI each. Krisjon Wilkerson reached base all four times for White, going 3-for-3 with a RBI and a walk. Jake Smith earned the win for Red, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout. Chris Oliver recorded the save with a perfect ninth inning. Jackson Lowery took the loss for White, giving up three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings. White grabbed an early lead with a run in the top of the fifth on a RBI groundout by Alex Gosser. Red answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Brown had a RBI single into left and Shaddy drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right. White tied the game at two in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Wilkerson to left. The series resumes with game two on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. Freshman right hander Dominic Taccolini will start for White, while freshman righty Zach Jackson will make the start for Red.
