Redlicki, Salazar Continue Historic Run
TULSA, Okla. – Mike Redlicki and Jose Salazar continued their respective runs with Round of 32 wins in the singles main draw at the ITA All-American only one day removed after picking up the program’s first wins in an ITA National Tournament main draw since 2008.
It’s the first time Arkansas has had a player advance to the Round of 16 in a main draw in an ITA National Tournament since 2008. Arkansas is also the only SEC team and one of just four teams nationally with multiple players remaining in the tournament. The competition only gets more difficult, as both Redlicki and Salazar will face two of the nation’s top-10 players in the next round.
“Both Mike and Jose played very well today,” head coach Andy Jackson said. “Both are gaining confidence and look forward to the increasing level of play as they advance deeper into the tournament.”
Redlicki, seeded 9-16 in the tournament and ranked No. 11 in the nation, defeated the No. 36 player in the nation, Purdue’s Gergely Madarasz, 6-4, 6-3, to set up a showdown with Stanford’s Tom Fawcett, the No. 4 seed and No. 6 player in the nation. Redlicki has yet to drop a set through eight matches this fall.
Salazar, a day after knocking off the No. 17 player in the nation, California’s Andre Goransson, won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, against South Florida’s Peter Bertran. Salazar, the No. 45 player in the nation, advances to face Wake Forest’s Petros Chrysochos, the No. 6 seed and the No. 8 player in the nation.
The Round of 16 and quarterfinals are set for tomorrow, with the semifinals on Sunday and championship match on Monday. Singles quarterfinalists will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 3-6, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Live scoring and live streaming will be available, and results will be posted at the conclusion of each day throughout the tournament.
