Rees continues good play

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Several University of Arkansas women’s golfers are enjoying a busy summer on the links. This week, senior Corinna Rees leads five Razorbacks at the 79th Women’s Trans National in Loudon, Tenn. Rees fired a first-round 69 and paired that with a 73 for a two-under 142. She finished stroke play tied for second overall. Senior Tiffany Phelps was just outside the top 10 tied for 11th with a two-day 146 (72-74). Incoming freshman Victoria Vela tied for 38th during stroke play with a 155 (79-76), followed by sophomore Katy Nugent who tied for 46th overall with a 157 (78-79). Incoming freshman Meagan Roberts was 84th with a 167 (79-88). The top 64 players move on to the Master Flight Match Play bracket beginning today. Phelps opens play at 10:20 a.m. taking on Maria Stapleton in the first round. Nugent has an 11:30 a.m. tee time with Cyna Maria Rodriguez with Vela teeing off at 11:30 a.m. against Christabel Goh. Rees faces Rachel Smith in a noon slot. In addition to this week’s Trans Amateur, Rees and current Razorback teammate Kelli Shean have qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur. Shean, a Cape Town, South Africa, native qualified Monday in Frisco, Texas, at Stonebriar Country Club shooting a 72 to win. Rees qualified last week in Richmond, Calif., at the Richmond Country Club. She shot 73. The 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur takes place Aug. 3-9, at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Mo.
