Rice to Play for First at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala.- The Arkansas women’s tennis team completed day two of the Marliss Gruver Memorial Tournament Saturday afternoon, finishing doubles play with a final round of singles play left.

Martina Zerulo and Shwetha Prabakar earned a third-place finish in Flight 2, falling to No. 1 seeded Martina Capurro and Camila Romero of Oklahoma before defeating Anastasia Grosheva and Lara Vovk 8-6. Lauren Alter and Thea Rice earned a fourth-place finish in the Flight 1 back draw. The pair fell to Ulyana Shirokova and Yuna Ito of Miami (Fla.) in the semifinals before falling 8-2 to Estela Perez-Somarriba and Daniela Roldan of Miami (Fla.).

In singles play, Zerulo fell 6-1, 7-6(6) to the No. 2 seed Sabina Machalova of Ole Miss in the back draw of Flight 1. She will face Daniela Ramirez of Georgia State tomorrow for third place.

Alter fell 6-3, 7-5 to No. 2 seeded Isolde de Jong of Ole Miss in the Flight 2 back draw and will face the No. 1 seed Lucia Marzal Martinez of Miami (Fla.) for third place. Prabakar fell to Grosheva 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-3 in the Flight 4 back draw semifinals and will face Annabella Bowen of Auburn tomorrow for third place.

Rice earned a 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-1 defeat of Kianah Motosono in the Flight 3 semifinals. She will face Shirokova tomorrow in the Flight 3 championship.

The final round of singles at Auburn will begin at 9 a.m.
