CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Matt Roberts won his seventh tennis match in the last five days on Tuesday as he and Arkansas teammate Rohan Gajjar each advanced in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association ICY/Hot All-American tournament.
Roberts is 10-0 this fall and 7-0 since Friday when he began advancing through the pre-qualifying round. He won twice on Friday, twice on Saturday and once each of the last three days. The junior from Little Rock is more than halfway to matching his win total of all of last year when he was 16-16.
On Tuesday, he won for the second time in the qualifying round with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Jacobo Hernandez of Tulane.
“Matt continued his strong play,” head coach Robert Cox said. “He handled his opponent today right from the start.”
Gajjar earned a bye into the qualifying round and won for the second time in the tournament, topping Matt Lockin of Vanderbilt, 6-0, 6-2. Lockin is ranked No. 62 in the country. Gajjar, 4-1 this year, is ranked No. 116.
“Rohan played solid and just jumped all over him from the beginning,” Cox said. “It was a great day for us.”
Roberts faces No. 60 John Isner of Georgia on Wednesday while Gajjar meets Sebastin Falk of Alabama-Birmingham.
