FAYETTEVILLE – Junior Alex Roman was named to the 2011 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team for the second year in a row.
The junior became involved with fund raising and Haitian relief efforts even before the devastating earthquake in Haiti a year ago. Most recently, Roman assisted in collecting change to benefit Loving Choice Pregnancy Centers of Northwest Arkansas. She volunteers counselor at a high school FCA Girls Retreat and worked as a camp counselor at Kanakuk, a Christian sports camp. Roman has also been a recruiting weekend volunteer and done mission work in Mexico.
"I am very proud of Alex being named to the SEC Community Service team,’ diving coach Dale Schultz said. "Alex’s effort in the pool, the classroom and with the youth in our community is what college athletics is supposed to be about. Alex leads by example and that is what makes her so special."
The St. Louis native was also involved with the record-breaking student participation in this year’s Lift Up America campaign. The University of Arkansas Athletic Department, Tyson Foods, Inc. and Lift Up America teamed together to distribute more than 38,000 pounds of food to the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank. According to Lift Up America representatives, the Razorbacks set a record for the best participation by a single university at a Lift Up America event with 134 student-athletes donating time to load food.
Roman just wrapped up the SEC Championships in Gainesville, Fla., where she finished 11th on the three-meter springboard and 12th on the one-meter board. Roman also competed in the platform prelims where she finished 17thoverall.
