FAYETTEVILLE – Patrick Rono was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday. This marks the second consecutive honor for the Lyndhurst, N.J., native who is being recognized this week for his performance at the 23rd Annual Chile Pepper Festival last weekend in Agri Park in Fayetteville.
Rono made his collegiate 10,000-meter debut with a 21st-place individual finish in a field of 288 runners at Chile Pepper. He posted a time of 30:19.4 to finish as the top freshman performer in the annual event. Rono finished fourth in the Razorbacks’ scoring lineup to help the team to a second-place finish in the team standings. Saturday’s run was the first time he appeared in the team’s top five.
Arkansas, the No. 15 team in the country, finished second at Chile Pepper ahead of third-ranked Oklahoma. Including Rono, the Razorbacks’ scoring lineup included Eric Fernandez, Rick Elliott, Layne Nixon and Chuol Dey.
The championship season for Arkansas begins Oct. 31 when the team returns to action for the 2011 SEC Cross Country Championship. The conference meet will be hosted by the University of Tennessee and run at the Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville, Tenn.
