Round One In The Books

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. – MarFirst-round action of the 2016 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championshipis in the books with three Razorbacks in the field.

Sophomore Maria Fassi, junior Jordy LaBarbera and incoming sophomore transfer Kaylee Benton represent the Razorbacks at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pennsylvania, on Monday.

Fassi, who is coming off a top-5 finish last week in Canada, struggled on the front nine at Rolling Green. She was 4-over with a double, three bogeys and a birdie to begin her round.

The Hildalgo, Mexico, native rallied on the back nine with three birdies finishing with a 40–33—73 in the first round. Fassi is in the clubhouse tied for 52nd overall.

Jordy LaBarbera, of Allen, Texas, posted 39–36—75, with a solid first round. LaBarbera suffered through three straight bogeys on the front nine and added two more on the back side. She rallied to finish strong with a birdie on No. 17, and is tied for 87th overall.

Incoming transfer sophomore Kaylee Benton rounded out the Arkansas players in the field. Benton is tied for 136th after shooting 38–41—79.

The 2016 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship consists of two 18-hole rounds of stroke play followed by six rounds of match play with the championship scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Sunday. The match-play rounds will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1. Coverage runs 2-5 p.m. CST Wednesday through Friday and from noon-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
