Roy and Perrotta advance to semifinals

Ft Myers, Fla. – The University of Arkansas Women’s tennis team got off to a strong start Saturday at the Florida Gulf Coast Invite, in Ft. Myers, Fla. The Hogs finished the first day of play undefeated in singles. Sophomores Stephanie Roy and Fernanda Perrotta will both play in the semifinals of their flight on Sunday."Overall we had a solid day at the event," assistant coach Patrick Sullivan said. "Obviously, singles was the highlight and we will look to be sharper in doubles tomorrow." In the first round of play in flight 6, Perrotta defeated Bianca Schulz of NW State in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. She will face Maria Christiansen of Missouri in the semifinals.Roy was dominant in flight 3, defeating, FGCU’s Jessica Sweeting, 6-3, 6-1. She will play Stephanie Tirumurti of Purdue in an attempt to advance to the finals of her flight on Monday. In doubles action, Roy and Perrotta battled, but fell 8-2 to Angelica Jogasuira and Prang Pantusart of Akron. In the first round of consolation they received a walkover and will compete again at 8 a.m.The FGCU Invite will resume play Sunday, Jan. 17, starting with doubles at 8 a.m. and singles to immediately follow.
