Sandi Morris Named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week

USTFCCCA Release

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – On Tuesday morning, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced that senior Sandi Morris has been named Division I Track and Field National Athlete of the Week for her efforts at last weekend’s Razorback Invitational. This marks the second time in her career that she’s earned the award.

The National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to eight collegiate track and field athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and male and female for the Junior College division).

The five-time All-America performer earned the honor for her record-breaking performance in the pole vault that helped lead the No. 3 Arkansas women’s track and field team the team title at the Razorback Invite at the Randal Tyson Track Center Jan 30-31. The Razorbacks finished with 111 points, 27 points better than second place Florida.

For the third time this season Morris gave the home fans a show in the pole vault. The senior won her third pole vault title at the Randal Tyson Track Center, her fourth overall on the season, with a mark of 15-3 to set a new personal-best and program record. The Greenville, S.C. native’s mark also gave her the No. 2 mark in college history and the best height not achieved at altitude.

Morris and the No. 3 Razorbacks will now head to Albuquerque, N.M. for the New Mexico Invite on Saturday, Feb. 7, before returning home to host a talented field in the 2015 Tyson Invitational (Feb. 13-14) at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

NCAA Division I Women’s National Athlete of the Week: Sandi Morris

  • Second career National Athlete of the Week honor (March 4, 2013).
  • For the first time this season, Morris was second in line behind collegiate pole vault record holder Demi Payne of Stephen F. Austin in the seemingly weekly queue to break said collegiate record. She made the most of it, clearing a career-best height of 15-3 (4.65m) on her first attempt and taking three very strong attempts at a new collegiate record of 4.76m.
  • With her 15-3 clearance, Morris achieved the best-ever height by a collegian while not competing at altitude and the second-best overall in collegiate history. It is also the best clearance in collegiate history that did not result in a collegiate record.
