Schmidt Selected to Tryout for Team USA

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – USA Baseball announced Tuesday that Arkansas freshmen Nick Schmidt was one of 12 college baseball players invited to participate in the 2005 USA Baseball National Team Trials on June 27-30 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Schmidt, a left-handed pitcher from High Ridge, Mo., has a 7-2 record and a 2.90 ERA in his freshman campaign. He has pitched 83.2 innings and leads the team in strikeouts with 74 and opponent batting average .228.
Schmidt joins Razorbacks’ first baseman Danny Hamblin among the 25 players that have been selected to tryout. Hamblin was among the first 13 players chosen on May 3.
The 2005 USA Baseball National Team will be selected from a pool of 36 players and be managed by Baylor Head Coach Steve Smith. Arkansas Head Coach Dave Van Horn will be an assistant on the team along with John Cohen of Kentucky and Rob Walton of Oral Roberts. The 20-man team roster will be announced on July 1.
