FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas left-handed pitcher Nick Schmidt and 3B/1B Danny Hamblin were named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch list on Tuesday by the College Baseball Foundation in Lubbock, Texas.
The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually to the national college baseball player of the year. The initial watch list consists of 120 student-athletes throughout college baseball.
“Nick and Danny are very deserving of any honors that come their way this season,” Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn said. “Nick has been our workhorse on the mound the last two years and Danny is the heart and soul of our offense. But don’t be surprised if we don’t have a few other players on that list by the end of the season.”
Schmidt, a junior from St. Louis, Mo., posted a 9-3 record with a 3.01 ERA last season. He pitched 116.2 innings while striking out the second-most batters in a single season in school history (145). Schmidt was named the SEC Pitcher of the Year and earned numerous All-America accolades.
Schmidt’s 2006 season followed a freshman campaign that earned him Freshman All-America honors with an 8-2 record and 89 strikeouts in 99.2 innings.
Hamblin, a three-year starter for the Hogs at first base and as the designated hitter, was also named to the list after hitting .289 with 17 home runs a 68 RBI last season. He is a .310 career hitter with 35 home runs and 159 RBI in 712 career at bats.
