Schmidt Makes USA Baseball National Team

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ­– Arkansas sophomore left-handed pitcher Nick Schmidt was selected to the USA Baseball National Team’s final 22-man roster it was announced by USA Baseball on Sunday morning.

“We are extremely pleased to see Nick selected to the USA National team,” Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn said. “He has proven week after week over the past two seasons that he is one of the best pitchers in college baseball, and he is very deserving of this honor.”

Schmidt becomes the first Razorback in school history to qualify for the national team.

The squad is comprised of seven freshmen, 14 sophomores and one junior.

The team will practice tomorrow morning at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I. and will open its official slate against Taiwan on July 4 at 6:05 p.m.

Schmidt was named a first-team All-American and the SEC Pitcher of the Year after posting a 9-3 record and a 3.01 ERA. He struck out 145, which is the second most in school history.
