FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The 18th-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team played themselves into a tie for ninth place after first-round action at the Mason Rudolph Invitational in Franklin, Tenn., Friday.

Junior Alex Schulte posted a career-best three-under 69 on the par-72 Legends Club leading Arkansas to a plus-10 298 after first round action.

“It was an awesome, awesome round for Alex,” said Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor. “Nine birdies in a round is amazing. It’s great to see her hard work pay off and I’m really proud of her.”

Schulte played the back nine three-under with seven of her nine birdies in the opening stretch.

Senior Lucy Nunn finished the day one-over with a 73 and is tied for 23rd overall. Freshman Katy Nugent is tied for 58th along with teammate junior Kristin Ingram with first-round 78s. Sophomore Kelli Shean rounds out the Arkansas scoring with a 79.

“Lucy was solid today,” said Estes-Taylor. “Her round started really nice. Some others struggled a bit but I think if we can get everyone to fire on the same cylinder in the next round we’ll be OK. We’re going to come out tomorrow and try to get some putts to drop and stay committed to our game plan to move up the leader board.”

Sixth-ranked Oklahoma State leads the field after the first day carding a two-under 286. Third-ranked UCLA is second with a 287 followed by top-ranked Southern California who posted a 288.
