FAYETTEVILLE — On the heels of its fifth-place finish last weekend at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational, the University of Arkansas men’s cross country team vaulted 10 spots to a No. 9 ranking in Tuesday’s release of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll. This week’s position represents the Razorbacks’ highest ranking of the season. Competing in a field of 20 ranked teams in Wisconsin, the Razorbacks ran to a tie for fifth place behind three top-20 individual performances from Eric Fernandez in ninth place, Solomon Haile in 15th place and Kemoy Campbell in 17th place. The top-five scoring lineup also included Layne Nixon and Cameron Efurd, respectively. Arkansas entered the race as the 12th-highest ranked team in the field–ranked 19th at the time–and beat seven higher-ranked teams. In addition to their effort against the ranked teams, the Razorbacks were the top SEC performers, finishing ahead of conference mates Georgia, Missouri and Texas A&M. Regionally, Arkansas remain the No. 2 team in the South Central rankings. “It was a good weekend for us,” head coach Chris Bucknam said. “We’re feeling good right now. We feel like we accomplished a goal and that was to prove to ourselves, more than anyone else, that we can run at that high level. I think we did that. You can sense a little bit of satisfaction with our guys and a little excitement. They know we’re not where we want to be yet but we’re getting there. Leading into the SEC Championships, we’re in a good spot and I like where their heads are.” The Wisconsin adidas Invitational was Arkansas’ final event before the SEC Championships. The conference meet will be contested Oct. 26 at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tenn. The men’s 10K competition is scheduled for an 11 a.m. (CT) start. Arkansas will then play host to the 2012 NCAA South Central Regional Championships on Nov. 9 in Fayetteville. The 2012 collegiate season will conclude Nov. 17 with the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky.
