SEC accolades for school-record holder Irwin

FAYETTEVILLE – On the heels of his school-record performance at the Arkansas Spring Invitational, Andrew Irwin has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Field Athlete of the Week and Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

"Andrew is such a great competitor," head coach Chris Bucknam said. "You can really tell he is enjoying what he’s doing. That’s a tribute to him and Coach (Doug) Case. He’s having a lot of fun out there. The conditions were right (Saturday) and he responded with a great competition."

In his first competition since winning the NCAA indoor title in March, Irwin opened his outdoor campaign with a 5.60m/18-4.5 clearance in the pole vault. He surpassed the previous school record of 5.55m/18-2.75 set in 2004 by former Razorback and 2009 US champion Jeremy Scott. With the victory and school mark in hand, Irwin took three attempts at a would-be American junior record of 5.72m/18-9.25.

The Mt. Ida, Ark., native now owns the indoor and outdoor school records and became the fourth Razorback in program history to clear 18 feet outdoors. Irwin is currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA with his clearance at the Arkansas Spring Invitational. He has won the past three competitions he’s been entered, dating back to the SEC Indoor Championships.

The weekly selections are the second and third of his career. Irwin was previous recognized as the SEC Freshman of the Week in January following the Arkansas-Texas Dual meet. Following his NCAA title performance at the national indoor meet, Irwin was named to the March 14 updated release of The Bowerman Watch List.

One week into its outdoor campaign, Arkansas moved up one spot in the April 3 release of the USTFCCCA national poll. The Razorbacks are ranked No. 4 this week and are one of seven teams from the SEC positioned in the top 25. Arkansas is joined in the rankings by Florida, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Georgia and Auburn.

Arkansas begins its two-week road swing April 6-7 with the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track & Angell Field in Palo Alto, Calif. For more information regarding Razorback track and field or University of Arkansas athletics, please visit ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
