FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas volleyball team will make a road trip to the state of Mississippi this weekend to open Southeastern Conference play. The Razorbacks begin conference play Friday at 7 p.m. (CT) against Ole Miss before heading to Starkville to close the weekend at 1:30 p.m. against Mississippi State. Arkansas carries a 7-4 record entering the conference season.
"We hit the road right away to begin SEC play," head coach Robert Pulliza said. "Your back is against the wall immediately when you’re on the road in one of the toughest conferences in the country. We’re doing some good things and have great potential but we have to keep working to get better at everything."
Friday’s match at Ole Miss will mark the start of the 20th SEC season for Arkansas volleyball. Through the past 19 years, the Razorbacks are 201-123 (.620) in regular-season conference matches. The Rebels will be Arkansas’ conference opener for just the second time in program history (2007). Arkansas leads the all-time series with both Ole Miss (27-11) and Mississippi State (33-5).
In their last outing, the Razorbacks capped the non-conference schedule with a straight-set win over Saint Louis. The team registered a season-high .378 hitting percentage against the Billikens and had five players with at least six kills for the fourth time this year. For their respective performances last weekend, freshman Breana Jones and sophomore Summer Morgan were named to the Razorback Invitational All-Tournament Team.
With her third dig against Saint Louis, senior libero Emily Helm cracked the program’s top-20 all-time digs list and currently sits in 19th place with 646 career digs. In 43 matches at Arkansas-all as the team’s starting libero-Helm is averaging just over 15 digs per match. The Queen Creek, Ariz., native equaled her career high earlier this season with a 27-dig performance at Kansas.
Both weekend matches are scheduled for audio stream on ArkansasRazorbacks.com. Fans can also follow along through live stats and Arkansas’ interactive blog. In-match updates will be provided through the team’s Twitter account.
