Second-place finish at Missouri Southern

FAYETTEVILLE – In the second race of the 2010 season, the No. 13 University of Arkansas men’s cross country "B" team posted a second-place finish Saturday morning at the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. Sophomore Cameron Efurd was the Razorbacks’ top finisher with a 10th-place performance.

"This was a chance for some of our young guys and we had some good individual performances," head coach Chris Bucknam said. "We got to see them in race conditions and I’m pleased with their effort during the race. Now we get back to training and keep trying to improve each week as we get deeper into the season."

The Razorbacks were outscored by first-place Wayland Baptist, 79-123. Arkansas finished the race with four top-30 efforts, including two performances inside the top 15.

In his second-career race on the 8K course at Missouri Southern, Efurd crossed the line in 24:40.70. The Rogers, Ark., native improved upon his 19th-place finish from last season in Joplin. This marks his first top performance in the Razorback lineup.

Arkansas’ second finisher was sophomore Aaron Hamilton in a time of 25:02, good enough for a 15th-place showing. Like Efurd, Hamilton bettered his placing from last season when he was 24th at the Missouri Southern Stampede. Sophomore Michael Golden, making his collegiate debut, was the Razorbacks’ third finisher in a time of 25:25.20. The Woodlands, Texas, native was 23rd overall.

Redshirt freshman Omar Abdi and junior Rick Elliott rounded out Arkansas’ top-five lineup. In his first race with the Razorbacks, Abdi was 26th overall in a time of 25:27.10. Elliott crossed the line in 26:15 and picked up a 49th-place finish.

Arkansas’ last runner in the race, sophomore Scott Gillespie clocked in at 26:26.10 and 59th-place finish. As the Razorbacks’ sixth runner, his placing did not factor in the team result.

In one week’s time, the Razorbacks return to action at the Stanford Invitational. The race is scheduled for a 12:50 p.m. (CT) start in Palo Alto, Calif. For continued updates, log on to ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
