Seven wins on day one for Hogs

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 22 Razorback women’s tennis team notched two wins in doubles and five wins in singles on the first day of play at the Virginia Winter Invite on Saturday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. In their first action of the spring, the Razorbacks played in 10 total matches against the No. 68 LSU Tigers. However, each match counted for the individual players and did not go toward the team’s overall record.

“We saw some good quality tennis today on almost every court which is encouraging for this early in the spring,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “LSU is much improved this season and there was excellent spirit out there on display today.”

In their first match as a ranked doubles team, the duo of sophomore Kelsey Sundaram and junior Kate Lukomskaya came up short against Whitney Wolf and Keri Frankenberger, 8-2. Sundaram and Lukomskaya went into this weekend as the No. 35 doubles team in the country. After that loss, the Hogs were able to rebound and score wins in their other two doubles matches.

In singles, the Razorbacks played seven total matches and notched wins in five of them. Even after suffering the doubles loss, Sundaram bounced back in her singles match and defeated Ariel Morton in a tight contest, 7-6, 7-6. Also, freshman Jade Frampton scored a tough three-set victory over Alexus Coates, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, the second three-setter on the day between the two teams.

Even without playing in doubles, sophomore Claudine Paulson had the most convincing victory of the afternoon, winning 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets over Kylie Adamek. Following close behind was junior Stephanie Roy, who defeated Kaitlin Burns in straight sets as well, 6-2, 6-0.

“Much like any three day tournament like this we will be looking to take a positive step forward each day,” said Hegarty.

The three-day tournament will continue tomorrow for the Razorbacks and will run through Monday. The team’s first dual match of the spring will take place on Saturday, January 22 against North Texas at the Billingsley Tennis Center in Fayetteville.
