FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas cross country opened the 2007 season with the hosting of the Arkansas Duels, Friday night at the Razorback Cross Country Course at Agri Park. The Razorbacks finished first as a team ahead of Missouri Southern.
Senior Shawn Forrest won the four-mile race with a time of 19:29.1 and led the Hogs to the team title with 18 points. Missouri Southern finished second with 37 points.
“It was a good opening run,” head coach John McDonnell said. “We won and our top four guys ran well. Rio Reina, our fifth runner, went out a little bit too fast and he paid the price at the end. Shawn (Forrest) looked great up in front. Tyler (Hill) and Scott (MacPherson) looked really good, too. And Matt (Munoz) was right there with them. I’m happy with the run and we are on the right track.”
Forrest bettered his time by almost 45 seconds from 2006 (20:12.00). Back from redshirting the 2007 track seasons because of a stress fracture in his foot, Forrest was grateful to be running along side his teammates again.
“It was great to open up with a good run”, Forrest said. “I’m pretty happy with the race. We went out hard and then eased up a bit. We stayed steady for the rest of the race. It feels really good to be back. I feel normal again.”
Senior Tyler Hill was second with a time of 19:53.5 and junior Scott MacPherson, bettering his 20:12.00 from 2006, clocked the same time for a third-place finish. Senior Matt Munoz, making his Razorback cross country debut, was the fourth finisher and the fourth Hog to cross the line. He did so in a time of 20:05.1.
Sophomore Rio Reina was the final Hog scorer in eighth place with a time of 21:17.0. He bettered his time on the four-mile course by almost two minutes from 2006 (22:53.00).
The Razorbacks will return to the course Sat., Sept. 15 for the Missouri Southern Stampede. For a complete schedule and results of Arkansas cross country, visit www.hogwired.com.
