Smith and Davis honored by SEC

FAYETTEVILLE – Juniors Michael Smith and Adrian Davis were each named Southeastern Conference Players of the Week on Monday after the Arkansas Football team’s upset 25-22 win over No. 20 Auburn, Saturday.

Smith was named the conference’s offensive player of the week while Davis took the league’s defensive line player of the week award. This is the first time since November of 2007 that the Razorbacks have earned two football players of the week awards in the same week.

Smith was Arkansas’ offensive workhorse in the Auburn victory as he accounted for 232 all-purpose yards. He recorded a career high 35 rushes for another career high 176 net yards including a highlight reel 63-yard run that put the game out of reach for the Tigers in the fourth quarter. Along with his rushing, Smith caught two passes for 46 yards. His 41-yard catch on a screen pass in the first quarter was a career long catch for the Tallahassee, Fla., native.

Smith’s effort on Saturday moved him to ninth in the nation in rushing with 119.8 yards per game and 10th in the nation in all-purpose yardage with 166.4 yards per game. His 599 yards rushing this season is nearly double his season totals from his first two years as a Razorback and his four touchdowns on the year are a single-season career high.

Davis was a stalwart for the Razorbacks on the defensive line and did a bit of everything for the Hogs. He recorded four solo tackles including three sacks for a total loss of 29 yards. He became the first player in the SEC this season to post three sacks in a single game and the first Razorback to accomplish the task since Jamaal Anderson did it against Tennessee in 2006. Along with his tackles, Davis intercepted an Auburn pass in the third quarter which led to a Razorback field goal and the lead for the first time in the game. He also forced a fumble and notched a quarterback hurry.

On the season, Davis ranks second on the Razorbacks with 35 tackles and leads the Hogs in both tackles for a loss and sacks. His three sacks in Saturday’s contest matched his career total entering the game and the Rosenberg, Texas, native intercepted his third career pass.
