Soccer Signee Telford Advances at U19 Championships

FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas Lady Razorback soccer signee Carly Telford led her England squad to the next round of the U-19 European Championships last weekend when she posted a pair of shutouts during the second round of competition in Italy, April 26-30.

Telford, the starting goalkeeper for England, earned a 4-0 decision against Moldova on the 26th , then allowed a pair of scores against the host Italy on the 28th as England fell 2-1. Group favorite Norway was next on England’s schedule and a splendid day between the pipes gave the English a 2-0 victory.

“Carly and Lyndsay (Corry) each played at the highest levels,” Arkansas head coach Gordon Henderson said. “The experience that they gained at this championship will only help them this fall as they assimilate to a new environment and to new players.”

England, Italy and Norway each finished pool play with identical 2-1-0 records, but it was Telford’s sparkling play that gave the English a +1 goal differential as compared to Norway playing even and Italy at -1.

“To give up only two goals over three games and post two shutouts is a great lift for both Carly and her teammates,” Henderson said.

Another Lady Razorback signee, Lyndsay Corry had slightly less luck with her Northern Ireland squad as the Irish went 1-2-0 in their three matches. Picking up a victory over the Ukraine, 2-0, Northern Ireland fell to Switzerland and Poland, 2-4 and 1-3, respectively.

“Northern Ireland finished third in their pool,” said Henderson. “Unfortunately, Lyndsay got knocked out of the Poland match, literally. She took either a head or elbow to the back of the head and got a concussion, but will be fine. That’s the level of play that we are looking for here at Arkansas.”

Telford and her English squad now head to the U-19 finals to be held in Hungary beginning on July 20. After pool play, the top two teams from each four-team pool will play to determine the champion.
