Stan Heath Press Conference – Memphis

Stan Heath Press Conference – Memphis
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas (5-5) faces Memphis (7-2) Thursday at 7:05 p.m. in a game televised by SEC-TV, which is carried on Fox Sports Southwest in Arkansas. Arkansas had its four-game winning streak snapped with Monday’s 71-45 loss at Oklahoma State. Following is a partial transcript of head coach Stan Heath’s press conference.

“We got an old-fashioned whipping (Monday). The only thing we can do is go back, look at the film and try to correct our mistakes. We got beat in two ways. In one way, we’re just young and didn’t handle the crowd and the atmosphere. In another way, they just manhandled us. We had turnovers but they also had 12 steals, which sometimes leads to easy baskets. It’s hard to do that and survive on the road. Hopefully we’ll grow from that and understand the intensity we need to play with. I don’t think the score was indicative of the game. They did beat us, but they beat us on mistakes we can change. That’s what was disappointing – that we’re not growing in areas where we need to grow. It was just simple things like catching the ball. We counted on film seven times when we just couldn’t catch the ball. We forced things and left our feet, we tried the catch the ball with one hand and we came down and took quick shots. Some of it was physical, but most of it was mental. We’ve put Oklahoma State behind us.”

“Memphis is a very good team. They have seven guys scoring in double figures. Chris Massie gives them an added dimension. He can score around the basket. This game will help prepare us for the SEC. That’s why it’s good to have games like this.

“They have a lot of scoring weapons and they really attack you off the dribble. They have a lot of depth. They play 10 or 11 guys and keep coming at you.”

Memphis series:

“It’s a good rivalry because Memphis is a city that borders both states. I think it’s a healthy series that could continue. We’ll evaluate that after the season ends.”

“All of our positions are open. Over the next couple of days, the players that go to war (in practice) will play.”

“The difference in our other games (during the four-game winning streak) and the Oklahoma State game was defensive pressure. They shot a high percentage because of their defense. It was the miscues on our end that led to some of their scores. There were times when we got the ball inside, got good looks and simply couldn’t finish. We got beat in several phases, it was across the board, but we need more consistent play during the critical points in the game.”

Quarterback Matt Jones joining the team:

“That’s a decision Matt will make. We’ve had no conversations at all. We have a locker in there for Matt if that’s what he wants to do. He needs to make a decision that’s best for him.”
