FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Basketball practice begins on Friday with Midnight Madness at Bud Walton Arena. Following is a partial transcript of head coach Stan Heath’s press conference to discuss Midnight Madness and the beginning of practice. “I think we’ll have an exciting, good, young team. I’m cautiously optimistic. We’re a little ahead of the game after going to Cancun (for four exhibition games over Labor Day weekend), but we still don’t have a lot of experience. We’re a very young team, but at the same time, we’re improved in areas where we were weak. We’ve added speed and quickness, we can score and we have players who are interchangeable. Ronnie Brewer can play several different positions. On the wing, we have Jonathon Modica and Olu Famutimi. We still haven’t totally addressed our need for a low post scorer, but Billy Pharis can score around the basket. I don’t want to put too much pressure on Vincent Hunter, but he can run the floor, get tip-ins and can play above the other people on the court. “Jonathon had a great summer. He’s in great shape, has improved his shot and will be a tough matchup for our opponents. Having other players around him who can score will only enhance his game. With the flexibility of having other guys who can play point guard, Eric Ferguson will have to play only 25 to 30 minutes a game and will be less likely to turn the ball over at the end.
