Arkansas Finishes Strong At LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – The fourth-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team played to a runner-up finish Tuesday at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic at the University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The Razorbacks posted rounds of 299-302-296 – 897 finishing ahead of seven top-50 teams.

Freshman Maria Fassi and countrywoman Regina Plasencia paced the Razorbacks tying for fourth place in the 96-player field. The Mexican student-athletes carded three-round 223s helping Arkansas to the team’s sixth top-three finish in seven events this season.

Fassi, a Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico, native, posted a three-over 75 in the final round, giving up two strokes with a double on her final hole. Fassi, who joined the team in January after graduating high school early, has been the Razorbacks’ top finisher in three spring events. She was solid all week shooting 74-74-75 – 223. She finished with eight birdies and one eagle in the three-day event.

Plasencia, a Guadalajara, Mexico, native, shot 75-75-73 – 223 moving up two spots in the final round for her second top-10 finish this season. Plasencia had a strong finish playing the back nine one-under. At seven-over for the tournament, Fassi and Plasencia were 15 strokes behind the leader but just one stroke from finishing in a tie for second place overall.

Freshman Cara Gorlei and sophomore Alana Uriell tied for ninth place overall shooting 11-over with 227. Uriell rallied in the final round moving up 18 spots giving Arkansas four players in the top-10 for the first time this season.

Gorlei, a Cape Town, South Africa, native, shot 73-77-77 – 227 and finished well despite having just one birdie in three rounds of play. It is her career-best finish as a Razorback. Uriell’s finish is her third top-10 showing of the year with rounds of 78-76-73 – 227.

Junior Summar Roachell rounded out the Razorback scores moving up 13 spots on the last day.  Roachell, from Conway, Arkansas, shot 77-80-75 – 232, counting her score in the final round.

Third-ranked Duke won the event leading wire-to-wire and finishing with an 881. The Razorbacks were followed by No. 45 Tulane who moved up four spots in the last round to finish third with 910. The rest of the top five included Wake Forest with 912, No. 33 North Carolina State and No. 50 LSU with 920.
