Strong Showing By Macias In First NCAA Appearance

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — In her first ever appearance at the NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, Arkansas freshman Ayumi Macias swam to a top-25 finish in the 500 freestyle Thursday at the IU Natatorium.

Macias led all Razorbacks on the second day of competition, touching 21st in a personal-best 4:40.92 in the 500 freestyle. She now possesses two of the top-five fastest times in school history after swimming the second-fastest at the NCAA Championships. Macias owns the top-five times on the team this season on the team in the event.

Senior Mary Margaret Soderberg touched 47th in the 200 IM in 1:59.74, while junior Chelsea Tatlow finished in 62nd in 2:01.86.

In the 1m springboard, junior Nicole Gillis scored a six-dive total of 244.05 to finish 38th.

Competition picks back up on Friday at 9 a.m. CT. Arkansas will be represented tomorrow in the 200 freestyle (Macias), 100 breast (Soderberg), 100 back (Tatlow) and the 3m springboard (Gillis).

ESPN3.com will stream the championships finals sessions live on Friday and Saturday. The morning sessions on Friday and Saturday will be streamed live on NCAA.com and www.indianasportscorp.org/ncaasd. Additionally, ESPNU will air a two-hour broadcast via tape delay at 7 p.m. Eastern time, Tuesday, March 28. Live results for the championships will be available on NCAA.com.
