FAYETTEVILLE – More than 75 Razorback student-athletes, administrators and special guests gathered on the University of Arkansas campus on Saturday afternoon to officially break ground for a Student-Athlete Success Center just north of Bud Walton Arena and adjacent to John McDonnell Field. The Razorback Band and Spirit Squads were on hand and helped give the ceremony a pep rally atmosphere. Chancellor Dave Gearhart, Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long and Faculty Athletics Committee Chairman Dr. Curt Rom addressed the crowd during the ceremony as did sophomore women’s basketball student-athlete Joey Bailey. As the Vice President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Bailey spoke on behalf of the more than 460 Razorback student-athletes who will benefit from the facility when it is completed in the summer of 2015.Long noted that of all the new facilities in the Master Facilities Plan that have been built or are currently under construction, the Student-Athlete Success Center was special because it would cater to every Razorback student-athlete and impact them throughout their lives. After the formal program, the speakers, were joined by football student-athlete Kody Walker and longtime University of Arkansas benefactor Marilyn Bogle, to officially break ground for the facility. The new Student-Athlete Success Center is designed to address the academic, nutritional, personal and professional development of more than 460 student-athletes, creating an integrated academic support program focused on graduation of all student-athletes at the University of Arkansas. The Student-Athlete Success Center will become the new home of the Bogle Academic Center and will help meet the needs of student-athletes by providing multiple learning environments including academic advising and course preparation, leadership training through the Razorback Leadership Academy career planning and service learning. The facility is being constructed at the corner of Meadow and Stadium between Pomfret Hall and John McDonnell Field.
