Super Sunday for Netters post two shutout victories
FAYETTEVILLE- It didn’t take long for the University of Arkansas women’s tennis team to dispose of the Sam Houston State and Saint Louis University on Sunday afternoon at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center. The Lady Razorbacks blanked the Bearkats, 7-0, and are leading the Billikens 5-0, at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center on Super Bowl Sunday.
The Lady’Backs (4-1) are now 3-1 at home this season.
The Sam Houston State match started off strong as doubles pair sophomore Rachel Wilhelm and freshman Melissa Hoffmeister gave the Lady’Backs an advantage with an 8-3 win over SHS’s Emma McDougall and Lauren Janak. Sophomore Ela Kaluder and junior Audrey Bordeleau captured the Lady’Backs’ fourth consecutive doubles point in as many matches with an 8-4 victory over Brooke Mills and Peta Taylor.
In singles, it was all Arkansas as freshman Carly Dixon blanked Sam Houston’s Janak in her first dual match as a Lady’Back. In her second singles match of the afternoon, she nearly got the same results against Saint Louis’ Caitlin Bukolic. Bukolic collected one game in the second set, but that was as she got as Dixon cruised 6-0, 6-1.
Franco clinched the match in Arkansas’ direction twice on Sunday with a 6-1, 6-2 win over SHS’s Assudani and a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win over SLU’s Ana Renda.
Kaluder remains undefeated in spring matches after she downded SHS’s Irina Sotnikova, 6-4, 6-3, and SLU’s Katerina Lozanova 6-0, 6-2.
“I thought we looked especially sharp in singles today,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “Both of these matches gave us a chance for some much needed match play.”
