Swimmers set personal bests on Grand Prix Day 3

COLUMBIA, Mo. – It was another successful day in the pool for the four swimmers from the No. 18 University of Arkansas swimming and diving team at the Missouri Grand Prix as senior Emily Fletcher qualified for the finals in the 200 LC meter fly and Shara Sutphen and Sarah Howard finished in the top 15 of the 800 LC meter free timed finals.Fletcher placed sixth in the ‘B’ final of the 200 LC meter fly with a career-best time of 2:23.31 after qualifying for the race with her time of 2:24.50 in the prelims where she placed sixteenth.

“Once again, Emily came back in the night session and swam faster than she did in the morning,” assistant Arkansas coach Todd Mann said. “She has one more race, tomorrow, in her career with the Razorbacks and it’s shaping up for her to go out at the top of her game.”

Once again, freshman Howard showcased her ability to fly through the water, touching in tenth in the timed finals of the 800 LC meter free on Sunday night, with a season-high time of 9:14.19. Sutphen finished right behind her in the No. 11 spot in a career-high final time of 9:15.36.

Freshman Maddie Fogel was in the pool for the 800 free as well, coming in No. 28 in a time of 9:40.25.

Monday is the last day of the Missouri Grand Prix and will close the meet at the Mizzou Aquatics Center with the 50 fly, 50 back, 50 breast and women’s 1500 free. Also on Monday, 22 members of the swimming and diving squad will travel to Auburn, Ala. to prepare for the Southeastern Conference Championships, beginning Wednesday Feb. 18 and running through Saturday Feb. 21.
