Eight members of the University of Arkansas swimming and diving team travel to Austin, Texas, for the American Short Course Championships Friday, Feb. 23 to Sunday, Feb. 25.
February 2-10 Arkansas swimming and diving competed at the the Southeastern Conference Championships in Lexington, Ken. The Lady Razorbacks finished ninth with 143 points. Auburn took home the SEC title.
Arkansas’ Top Finisher
Junior Emily Gregory placed 12th in the 200 butterfly the final day of competition. She qualified for the finals with a 15th-place finish and a time of 2:05.00 in the preliminaries. She had the best Lady’Back finish of the championships touching in 12th in the finals with a 2:04.33
Fulop took 13th
Senior Mariann Fulop also qualified for the finals of the 200 backstroke. She placed 13th and turned in a 2:03.03.
Engs earns personal-best times
Sophomore Elizabeth Engs earned a personal-best time and qualified for the finals in the preliminaries of the 400 IM. In the finals Engs shaved nearly four more seconds off of the career-best time she earned earlier in the day and finished 15th with a 4:26.65. Engs had two other career-best times in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM. She finished 20th with a 2:21.67 in the 200 breast, taking three seconds off of her previous individual best, and 27th in the 200 IM with a 2:06.36.
The Lady’Backs turned in the best times of the season in the 200 free relay (1:35.16), the 800 free relay (7:33.06) and the 400 medley relay (3:50.35).
Diving Portion of SECs
In the platform diving event sophomore Madison Palmer led the way for the Lady’Backs placing 13th-with a score of 196.45. Palmer finished ninth on the three meter, just one place away from making the finals, with a score of 269.85. Junior Brieanne Kushner had the top Lady-Back finish on the one meter placing 10th. Palmer was right behind her finishing 11th with a 243.95.
In the SEC Championships alone, the Lady’Backs earned 14 career-best times and 21 season-best times.
Top Times for the Season
Arkansas turned in 74 individual-best times so far this season.
Several Lady’Backs have two or more individual wins this season. Fulop enjoys 10 victories, Gregory has eight, Jackson has six, Thibodeaux and Kushner have five, and Palmer lays claim to three.
Arkansas finished the regular season 4-4 in dual meets, the most wins the program has seen since the 2002-03 season when the Lady’Backs finished 5-5.
Arkansas diving travels to the University of Texas at Austin for the Zone D Diving Competition March 1-3.
