ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Arkansas’ contingent at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships was eliminated in consolation play on the second day.
The doubles team of Matt Roberts and Imraan Ismail, which won the ITA Central Region V title to earn a spot in the 16-team field, fell to LSU’s Mark Growcott and Ken Skupski, 8-6. They lost in the first round to Harvard’s Jason Beren and Martin Wetzel, 8-6.
In singles, Rohan Gajjar, which fell to No. 1-ranked Catalin Gard of Ole Miss in a pair of tiebreaker setbacks in the first round, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3), lost to Dante Cipulli of Southwest Baptist, 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-2. Gajjar earned a spot in the 32-man field by reaching the finals of the Central Region V tournament.
Adrians Zguns was eliminated by Matias Silva of Boise State, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), after dropping his first-round match to Clemson’s Nathan Thompson, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Zguns earned an at-large bid based on his No. 10 national ranking.
Despite the setbacks, Arkansas recorded a good fall. Gajjar went 10-6 and Roberts 13-2 in singles with Matt Simpson going 6-4 and Andrei Nicoara 5-4. Roberts and Ismail completed the fall 9-4 in doubles while Zguns and Gajjar went 2-0.
