Tennis Hogs Lose Close Match to Bulldogs
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas’ tennis team (4-7, 2-4 SEC) could not overcome the crutial doubles point Friday evening losing 5-2 to Mississippi State.

“Our doubles hurt us a little bit tonight,” Cox said. “For us to beat a good team like this, a top-25 team, we are going to have to get better in our doubles. We are playing good but we are just letting it slip through our fingers.”

Mississippi State began the match by winning two-of-three doubles matches clinching the doubles point. Aleksey Bubis and Eduardo Pacheco teamed up to win the only match for the Hogs.

Singles action was highlighted by eighth ranked Oskar Johansson playing sixth ranked Marco Baron. Johansson won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second set 1-6. In the final set, Johansson came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 6-4.

“It is always better to play someone that is ranked higher than yourself,” Johansson said. “I have been ranked fifth and everyone that I play is lower than me and it puts a lot of pressure on you. It is good to be an underdog. I haven’t won in a while and it felt pretty good.”

Johansson ended his three-match skid with the win and is 9-8 versus top 100 opponents.

“It is not very often that Oskar being ranked eighth in the nation that he will face someone ranked higher than him,” head coach Robert Cox said. “It was such an up and down match. Oskar is battling a few little mental lapses, but he has the talent to come out and overcome all those lapses and pull out a win.

“The third set was a great set for Oskar. It was about the most aggressive play that I have seen him play all year.”

Freshman Aleksey Bubis was the only other Razorbacks to pick up a victory.

“I’m really proud of Aleksey,” Cox said. “You could tell that he was right in the match from the very beginning.”

The Hogs will play Sunday, March 19 against Louisiana-Monroe beginning at 1 p.m.
