Tennis Hogs Win in Hawaii, 7-0
HONOLULU, Hawaii. – Even without All-American Oskar Johansson, the top-ranked player in the country, in the singles lineup, the University of Arkansas men’s tennis team rolled past Hawaii, 7-0, late Monday in Honolulu as three Razorbacks won three-set matches.
Tuesday’s scheduled match against Chaminade has been canceled. The Razorbacks, who improved to 11-5, face sixth-ranked Washington Wednesday night before returning home.

“We got off to a great start,” UA head coach Robert Cox said. “We had some tough matches and everybody came through, so this is a good win. Washington has a good team so we have to get ready for another tough one.”

In the Hawaii victory, Arkansas won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Johansson and Henrik Tofft beat Lincoln Leeder and Amandeep Singh, 8-2, at No. 1 while Aleksey Bubis and Oggie Kolev improved to 9-1 after beating Malino Oda and Reggie Moralejo, 8-4, at No. 2. The Hogs’ Eduardo Pacheco and Magnus Kullenberg also had an 8-4 victory, defeating Jorge Gonzales and Evan Spiegel at No. 3.

In singles play, Tofft played No. 1 and beat Singh, 6-2, 7-5, and Kolev downed Jorge Gonzalez, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3.

The other matches could have gone either way, but the Hogs won all four. At No. 2, Kullenberg won a 10-5 tiebreaker to win the first set, 7-6, and won the match over Moralejo with a 6-4 second-set win.

The fourth, fifth and sixth spots all went three sets. Tiago Azevedo won at No. 4, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7), over Francisco Brignole; Bubis beat Oda at No. 5, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4; and Tim Shuler downed Leeder at No. 6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Monday’s matches were played outdoors, and Cox said playing outside in Hawaii is a little different.

“There is a little more wind playing outside here, but that is why we are here, to get experience outdoors” Cox says. “Now that we have one match under our belt, we have to get to work and get ready for the next one.”

Following the Washington match, Arkansas travels to Tulane on March 28 and Mississippi State on March 31 before returning home to face South Carolina on April 6.
