Tennis concludes 2005 fall season with several key wins

Atlanta, Ga. – Clutch play on Sunday provided onlookers with a shortened version of the 2005 University of Arkansas women’s tennis team fall season as the Lady Razorbacks took four of singles matches on the final day of the SEC Fall Coaches Classic.

Senior Karina Ledaja led the way for the Lady’Backs in singles with a B Flight Consolation win over Evgenia Subbotina. Ledaja dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back big by winning the second and sealing the third, 6-3, 6-4.

Sophomore Audrey Bordeleau continued her hot streak of play on the final day of competition. The Quebec City, Quebec native disposed of South Carolina’s Justine Walsh in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1 to avenge a match she lost to Walsh in the previous spring season.

Arkansas came back after dropping another first set when senior Melissa Cornett shocked Mississippi State’s Elna de Villiers with two quick set victories to take back the match, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Lindsey Brown also collected a victory for the Lady Razorbacks. Brown won decisively over Auburn’s Erin Gray 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, Cornett and freshman Rachel Wilhelm teamed up to give Daniela Juskova and Tatiana Feit of Mississippi State all the could handle in an 8-6 win.

“Competitively speaking, today was perhaps our best day of the fall,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. "After the sheer number of matches we have played in this fall, we still have that competitive drive that is motivating us every step. That drive will fuel us through the conditioning season and into the spring season.”

The Lady’Backs resume play in January for the 2006 spring season. For more information, please visit LADYBACKS.COM.
