Tennis Fact Sheet 1

Spring Tennis: The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team is ready to begin its 2007 spring tennis schedule on Saturday, January 27, against the No.32 ranked North Carolina State Wolfpack. The Lady Razorbacks follow that match up with a bout against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on the following day, Sunday, January 28.

More on N.C. State: It’s been 16 years since the Lady’Backs have faced off against the Wolfpack. In 1990, Arkansas trounced N.C. State 8-1 in the old nine-point scoring format in which each doubles match counted toward the overall match score. Times have changed however, as State comes to the Dills Indoor Tennis Center ranked higher than the Lady’Backs. Last season, State won their first NCAA Tournament match ever with a 4-3 win over then No. 26 William and Mary.

More on Tulsa: Though tradition tells of classic battles between the two cross-state rivals, Tulsa has fallen out of the national rankings and is looking for a way back in, presumably with a win over No. 47 Arkansas on January 18. The Lady’Backs didn’t play the Golden Hurricane in the 2006 spring season, but in 2005 Arkansas upset No. 46 Tulsa on their home court in a four and a half hour battle, 4-3.

Big Finish: Emerging out of the darkest era in Lady Razorback tennis history, the 2006 edition of the team exploded back onto the Southeastern Conference tennis scene with five straight conference wins on their way to posting a second place finish in the SEC Western Division. Last season, Arkansas won more conference matches last season than in the previous five years combined.

Fantastic Fall: Sophomore Ela Kaluder paced the Lady’Backs in the fall ranked 65th in the nation in singles, finishing with a 12-6 singles record. Junior Maryori Franco also prepped nicely for 2007 with a 12-4 mark last fall. 2007 newcomer Nanar Airapetian got her overall record with the Lady’Backs off on the right foot with a 9-3 record. In doubles, the most successful Lady’Back pair was Kaluder and junior Audrey Bordeleau as they cruised with an 8-2 fall record.
