This Week in Razorback Baseball

This Weekend
Arkansas heads west to take on No. 21 Long Beach State in a three-game set. Long Beach is ranked 21st in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll and is ranked 24th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Razorbacks and 49ers have split the 10 previous meetings in the series with Arkansas holding a current two-game winning streak over the 49ers.

Stingy Rotation
Through the first five games of the 2002 season, the Razorback pitching rotation has made the going tough for opponents. The staff has a 1.02 ERA and has allowed only five earned runs. Arkansas hurlers have only walked seven batters in 44.0 innings of work while recording 36 strikeouts. The Hogs’ weekend rotation of Jonathan Richmond, Charlie Isaacson and Gary Hogan, Jr., has a collective ERA of 1.52 with 18 K’s.

Smashing Debut
After missing the first two games of the season, senior OF Michael Conner made a dramatic debut against Air Force. The Roland, Okla., native entered the game in the sixth inning and took the first pitch over the left field fence. In his next at bat in the seventh, Conner ripped a 1-1 pitch over the left-center field fence that landed on the road 10 feet beyond the outfield wall. Conner just missed a third home run in the ninth when a deep fly to left sailed foul over the wall by a couple of feet. Conner lined out to third to finish 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Wishy Shines
Sophomore OF/DH Andrew Wishy has been on fire to open the 2002 season. Wishy leads the Razorbacks with a .526 batting average, going 10-for-19 in the first five games. Wishy is also tied for the team lead in home runs and leads the club with six runs batted in. The Raytown, Mo., native is second on the squad with a .571 on-base percentage. Wishy has hit safely in every game this season and has a .947 slugging percentage.

Looking Sharp
In his first start of the year, senior RHP Charlie Isaacson pitched three innings of hitless ball against Southwest Missouri. Isaacson recorded six strikeouts in five innings of work and allowed just four hits and one earned run. The six strikeouts were the most for Isaacson since fanning six on April 27, last season against Kentucky in 6.1 innings of work. Despite the strong performance from Isaacson, the Bears held on for a 3-2 victory over the Razorbacks.

Woods Gets Win
Senior RHP Scott Woods earned his second career victory after pitching four innings of scoreless relief against Texas-Arlington on Sunday. The Rogers, Ark., native tied personal bests in innings pitched and strikeouts as he fanned three Mavericks. Woods allowed only one hit, a double, in his four innings of work and did not give up a walk. Woods’ last win came on March 30, in a 6-5 win against Mississippi State after throwing three innings of one-hit ball.

Goodwin Heats Up
Redshirt freshman Clay Goodwin found his groove at the plate during the Texas-Arlington Invitational. Goodwin hit .428 during the tournament with three doubles, three runs scored and two RBI. Goodwin is currently second on the team with a .438 batting average and leads the Hogs with four doubles.
