Tigu advances to nationals with victory

FAYETTVILLE, Ark. — Senior Anouk Tigu of the Razorback women’s tennis team advanced to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships on Monday after winning her final singles regional match and being crowned the central regional champion at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center. Tigu won six matches in four straight days to claim the title, including a final three-set victory over Natalia Pintusava of Minnesota, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.

“I’m very proud of Anouk’s performance,” said head coach Michael Hegarty. “All three sets were extremely high quality and it’s a fantastic achievement to win this title on her home courts.”

With the victory, the Holland native will now travel to New York City to face the winners from other regions in hopes of capturing the USTA/ITA National Indoor Singles Championship. This continues a stellar fall season for Tigu as she is now 10-1 on the season and has won six straight matches.

Earlier in the day, Tigu and her doubles partner, sophomore Claudine Paulson, faced Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Alice Radu of Oklahoma in the doubles regional final. Unfortunately, the Hogs couldn’t make it a clean sweep as they fell just short of the doubles title, 8-5.

With the exception of Tigu, this tournament marks the end of a very successful fall season for the women’s tennis team, who have racked up a 50-34 singles record so far and a 25-17 record in doubles.

The 18th-ranked Tigu will begin play in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships on Tuesday, November 5th.
