PALO ALTO, Calif. – The top Razorback doubles team of senior Anouk Tigu and sophomore Claudine Paulson had a tough second round match on their hands at the NCAA Women’s Individual Doubles Championship on Friday. Fresh off Florida’s NCAA Championship a week ago, the No. 2 doubles team of Alex Cercone and Allie were the Sweet 16 matchup for the Hogs and ended up sending Tigu and Paulson home in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. This was the final match for any Razorback women’s tennis player in the 2010-11 season and ends yet another successful season for the Hogs.
“We never could get much going tonight,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “You have to credit the Florida team for making it tough on us out there. Hats off to them.”
Tigu and Paulson went into the final weeks of the season ranked 14th in the nation and now end the season with a record of 27-12. 19 of their wins came in dual matches, all at the No. 1 position on the team. The final national poll of the season will be released next week.
For the rest of the team, it ends a season that saw not only a Hog squad reach the NCAA Tournament again, but saw a young, but deep team have stellar seasons. Over 150 singles matches and 75 doubles matches were claimed as Razorbacks victories this season and Tigu led the way at the top position with a top-30 singles ranking and 26 wins on the year.
Not far behind Tigu was junior Emily Carbone, who tallied 25 wins on the year and was a solid No. 5 player for the Razorbacks all season long.
Including Carbone and Tigu, five players total had at least 20 wins this season for Arkansas. A surprising, but welcomed contribution on the team came from freshman Jade Frampton who went 23-12 in singles and garnered two SEC Freshman of the Week honors this year. Even with the loss of Tigu to graduation, Hegarty says the depth of the team as well incoming freshman will keep the team around the top of the SEC in 2011-12.
