LOS ANGELES — Senior Anouk Tigu and sophomore Claudine Paulson concluded a successful first day of play at the ITA Riviera All-American Tournament on Thursday after Tigu won her first singles match of the weekend in straight sets and the doubles team of Tigu and Paulson won their first round doubles match as well.
In her singles match, the 18th-ranked Tigu defeated No. 111 Mary Clayton of Duke, 6-4, 6-4. Earlier in the day in doubles action, the 26th-ranked tandem of Tigu and Paulson defeated theNo. 6doubles team in the nation of Lauren Embree and Joanna Mather from Florida, 8-5.
“Anytime you beat Florida and Duke in the main draw at the All-American, you have had a stellar day,” said head coach Michael Hegarty. “The best part was that we played quality tennis at the critical times in each of the matches. The competition is fierce out here, but we are up to the challenge.”
With both wins, both players will be in action again on Friday at the Riviera Tennis Club. Play will begin with doubles at 10 a.m. CST. Tigu and Paulson will face Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos from Southern California. That Trojan team reached the second round after qualifying for the main draw earlier in the week.
Over in singles, Tigu is now slated to face Nina Secerbegovic of Baylor. She reached round two after winning in straight sets as well. This singles match is set to take place at 2:30 CST.
