Tigu leads charge in Day 2 of Virginia Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Anouk Tigu paced the 14th-ranked University of Arkansas women’s tennis team with two wins on Sunday as the Razorbacks topped opponents from the University of North Carolina at the Virginia Winter Invite.

Tigu, ranked 66th in singles, was the only Razorback to claim a victory in both doubles and singles. In singles, she defeated No. 103 Austin Smith, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. As for doubles, 8th-ranked Tigu and Nanar Airapetian toppled a top 20 opponent in No. 15 Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski, 8-6.

Arkansas’ top player, second-ranked Aurelija Miseviciute, dropped another top 50 singles opponent No. 47 Sanaz Marand, 6-2, 6-0. Senior Ela Kaluder defeated Jocelyn Ffriend, 6-2, 6-1, while freshmen Emily Carbone and Kate Lukomskaya claimed two more wins to begin the spring season.

“Much like our NCAA tournament match with UNC last spring, today’s individual matches were of a good quality and we gained a lot from the competition,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty.

Overall, the Razorbacks completed the day with a 6-3 record against the 18th-ranked Tar Heels.

“UNC has a great squad so these were some encouraging results for us today. We have another great opportunity to get better tomorrow and we want to finish strong,” Hegarty said.The Razorbacks will take to the courts tomorrow at 8 a.m. in the final day of the Virginia Winter Invite for individual matches against players from the University of Utah.
