FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas junior Anouk Tigu and sophomore Kate Lukomskaya both won the finals in their singles draws Sunday at the Razorback Classic played at the George M. Bilingsley Tennis Center and Dills Indoor Stadium.
Tigu continued her strong play and defeated Tulsa’s Alexandra Kichoutkin 6-1, 6-0, while Lukomskaya also earned a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-3, over Marta Marcinkowska from Tulsa.
Tigu and Lukomksaya combined to go undefeated in singles throughout the tournament.
“I was very excited that we were able to win both of the singles flights,” Arkansas coach Michael Hegarty said. “Certainly our more experienced players stepped up again today. Our younger players had a tougher time but will be better in the long run because of the experience they earned today and this weekend.”
The remaining Razorbacks faced tough competition Sunday. Sophomore Emily Carbone dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Anastasia Erofeeva of Tulsa, and freshman Annemijn Koenen lost 6-3, 6-1 to Tulsa’s Ewa Szatkowska. Kelsey Sundaram lost to Oklahoma State’s Nataliya Shatkovskaya 6-1, 6-2 and Claudine Paulson fell to Tulsa’s JoAnne Karaitiana 6-0, 6-4. Jie Zeng of Tulsa beat Valentina Starkova 6-2, 6-1 and Adriana Nieto rounded out the Hogs singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Tulsa’s Caroline Beaulieu.
In final doubles action, Lukomskaya and Sundaram lost to the Tulsa duo of Karaitiana and Kichoutkin 8-6. The Arkansas tandem of Carbone and Starkova dropped its final, 8-1, to another Tulsa pair, Erofeeva and Szatkowska.
Koenen and Nieto picked up a win in consolation doubles, beating Kansas State’s Carmen Borau-Ramos and Natasha Vieira 8-5.
Rain in the Fayetteville area caused the morning’s final doubles round to be played inside. Skies cleared just long enough to begin the singles round outdoors, but the athletes were forced to finish their matches inside when the rain returned.
The Razorbacks return to action Oct. 21-25 at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships in Norman, Okla.
