FAYETTEVILLE- junior Anouk Tigu was named Southeastern Conference player of the week for the first time of her career today after a sensational performance against a highly touted No. 36 Oklahoma team. Tigu led the Razorbacks to an emotional 6-1 victory over the Sooners with wins in both singles and doubles.
Tigu and freshman Claudine Paulson came out big on Sunday, downing the No. 31 Maria Constantinescu and Teona Tsertvadze of Oklahoma, 9-7. With the win, the duo of Tigu and Paulson winning the doubles point and reversing results of the central regional doubles final from the fall. The duo cracked into the rankings at No. 18 in the nation, boasting a 6-2 dual season record and 14-4 overall record.
“Anouk is having an outstanding season, “ head coach Michael Hegarty said. “She has been working very hard to lead this team in both singles and doubles. I’d say she is playing the best tennis of her career this spring.”
Tigu picked up her third consecutive win in singles play with the ranked win over No. 96 Constantinescu of Oklahoma at the No. 1 singles position. The tandem exchanged the advantage for two hours but Tigu was able to take the match in straight sets, 7-6(1), 7-6(6). Tigu improved to a 7-2 dual match record, 16-4 season record and a 52-23-career record. On the year, Tigu has defeated four nationally ranked players including, No. 16 Venise Chan of Michigan and No. 94 Nina Munch-Soegaard of TCU. She jumped eight spots on Tuesday in the ITA rankings moving to No. 54 in the country in singles.
The Razorbacks will start conference play this week on the road against No. 6 Florida on Friday evening at 5 p.m. in Gainesville, Fla., before Sunday’s match up against No. 58 South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., at 1 p.m. For more information and complete coverage, please visit ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
