FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.– University of Arkansas women’s basketball head coach Tom Collen met with Razorback fans at the first luncheon of the season on Monday. Collen and select student-athletes hold a monthly luncheon at Guest House International, which they invite all fans to attend.
Collen was joined by Jessica Jackson, McKenzie Adams and Kelsey Brooks, who each scored inthe double digits in their collegiate debuts last Friday against Sam Houston State.
"I was excited that they stepped up and they played as well as they did," Collen said of the entire freshman class. "I know that they’re more than capable. I don’t think it surprised me from what their talent level was. I think to have three of them step up in the same game and shoot the ball from the three-point line as well as they did was really fun. It gives our fans an indication of just how good these kids can be on any given night."
Picked to finish 12th out of 14 teams in the SEC this season, Collen encouraged fans that he and the Razorbacks have much more ahead of them this season and are ready toprove people wrong.
"I take a lot of pride in what we’ve been able to build up here and winning on a consistent basis," Collen said. "We’ve finished higher than they’ve picked us every single year I’ve been here. If they want to pick us that low, it’s up to us to prove it. I think sometimes that’s what happened at Arkansas. It’s the ‘Never Yield’ motto and battling to the very end. We’re not going to quit, we’re not going to give up and we’re not going to listen to other people."
Collen also looked ahead and previewed Wednesday’s opponent, Oral Roberts.
"They’ve got good winning tradition," Collen said."They went to the NCAA tournament last year. They graduated some good players, but I don’t think they’re going to be intimidated by us. They went up and played at Kansas in front ofa nice crowd. Kansas has been to the Sweet 16 the last two years. Certainly, getting that game under the belt in thatkind of environment is going to allow them to come in here and compete and not worry or get intimidated."
Arkansas and Oral Roberts compete in the second game of the season inside Bud Walton Arena on Wednesday. Opening tip is schedule for 7 p.m.
