@TomCollen Stresses Strong Finish At Monthly Luncheon

FAYETTEVILLE — With five conference games remaining this season, University of Arkansas women’s basketball head coach Tom Collen held another of his monthly luncheons and met with fans and supporters of the program at Guest House International in Fayetteville, Ark., on Monday.

The Razorbacks (16-8, 3-8 SEC) have three remaining home games at Bud Walton Arena this season, which Collen stressed the importance of in giving the team a chance for one final postseason push. Arkansas begins a two-game homestand by welcoming Alabama to town on Thursday.

"We’ve got two home games coming up and I know we certainly can’t take any home games for granted because we’ve lost a couple of games that we could have won," Collen said. "We’ve got Alabama first and they’re not an easy team. They’ve got wins over Missouri, they beat Kentucky at Kentucky and they beat Georgia at home. They’re going to be a challenge for us."

The outlook gets no rosier for the Razorbacks when looking beyond their home schedule, with trips to face No. 19 LSU and No. 14 Texas A&M still remaining. All the more reason Collen said he has stressed the importance of handling home court.

"I’ve told the team, and I’ve been very honest with them, that I think we’ve got to win our final three home games," Collen said. "I think we’ve then got to find a way to beat one of these top-20 teams on the road. We’re not going to back down from that."

While the youth and inexperience of this season’s team has presented challenges, Collen said the growing pains will prove to be a blessing in disguise.

"The good thing about this team is that it’s young, but the hard thing about this team is that it’s young," Collen said. "We’re optimistic that we can get done what we need to do to have a nice finish the rest of this year. We’re graduating one senior and we’re only going to keep getting better. We’ve got the right kind of players and players that want to be here and want to play here.

"We’re going to learn, grow and get through this thing so that by the time these players are sophomores and juniors we’re going to be in position to make our fans proud."

Arkansas has three remaining home games at Bud Walton Arena this season, beginning with Alabama visiting Thursday. Opening tip between the Razorbacks and Crimson Tide is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in what will be the Play 4Kay Pink Game.

Collen and the Razorbacks invite all fans to attend monthly luncheons at Guest House International, formerly Clarion Inn, at 1255 South Shiloh Drive in Fayetteville. The final luncheon is set for March 10. The price for this season’s luncheon is $12 payable by cash or check at the door. Contact the Razorback Marketing Office at 479-575-6055 for more information.
