SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Arkansas sophomore golfer Matt Bortis defeat Connor McHenry 3 & 1 in the first round of match play at the Missouri Amateur Championships on Thursday morning at the Millwood Golf and Racquet Club.
Bortis was the No. 1 seed entering match play after firing a 69 in the first round of qualifying on Monday and a 62 in the second round on Tuesday. The nine-under-par 131 set a new Missouri Amateur Championships 36-hole qualifying record.
“I really wanted to stick to the way I had been playing,” Bortis said. “But I got caught up in the match and kind of let the flow of the match dedicate my play. I still feel like I hit the ball pretty well, and I putted very well.”
Thursday’s win advances Bortis into Friday’s second round of match play. He will face the winner of Thursday’s match between 32nd-seeded Ben Song and 33rd-seeded Rich Gleghorn.
The third round of match play will follow Friday’s second round at Millwood. Quarterfinal and semifinals rounds will be played on Saturday with the finals slated for 36 holes on Sunday.
