Top Hogs fall in singles, advance in doubles

PALO ALTO, Calif. – On day two of the NCAA Women’s Individual Singles Championship and the first day of the NCAA Women’s Individual Doubles Championship, senior Anouk Tigu and sophomore Claudine Paulson got mixed results in their matches today. Tigu dropped her second round singles match with Indiana’s Leslie Hureau, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, but bounced back with Paulson in their first doubles match of the week with a 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 win over Iowa’s Sonja Molnar and Jessica Young.

This is the second year in a row that Tigu has been ousted in the second round of the individual singles tournament. She finishes her Razorback career with a 2-2 record in the tournament. It is, however, the first doubles win for the Hog tandem in the NCAA individual postseason and they will move on to face the winner of the match between Alex Cercone and Allie Will of Florida and Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra of Virginia.

“Some mixed emotions out there today for the team,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “Such a great effort to pull out a great doubles win after a difficult loss in the singles. It was a long day that ended extremely well and we will be excited to compete again tomorrow.”

Since this is the final tournament of the season, the loss completes the senior season for Tigu. She finishes with a 26-11 overall record including eight conference wins and two in postseason tournament play. She was ranked No. 33 by ITA heading into the week and will look to stay in the top 35 in the final poll next week. All season, Tigu has been ranked in the top-35.

On the flip side, the doubles team of Paulson and Tigu will have at least one more match after their win on Thursday. Even after dropping the first set, the Hog duo responded well to win the second set in tiebreaker fashion and then easily take the third set, earning the win in the eighth game of the final frame. The win is their 27th overall this season. A win tomorrow will advance the two players to the Elite 8 of the tournament.
